Here are the instructions for submitting to ESS2027 through the ExOrdo Portal.

Our submission system is organized by Tracks. These include: 

  1. General Paper Submissions

  2. Author-Meets-Critics Sessions

  3. Fully Composed Invited Speaker Panels 

  4. Fully Composed Paper Sessions

  5. Undergraduate Posters 

  6. Mini-Conference Paper Submissions 

  7. Committee on Gender Equity Spotlight Session Paper Submissions 

  8. Committee on the Status of Ethnicity, Race and Racism Spotlight Session Paper Submissions 

  9. Committee on Community Colleges Spotlight Session Paper Submissions 

 

Please submit your papers/sessions to the relevant Track. Information for submitting to specific Tracks and DEADLINES are listed below. Please keep this webpage open if you would like to refer to these instructions during the submissions process.  

 

 

 

Please note that individuals are limited to ONE PRESENTATION at ESS2027 (exceptions are made for AMC panelists and invited speakers). 
 

1. General Paper Submissions (DEADLINE: October 15)  

 

Requirements: General paper submissions require a title, author(s), an abstract (max 500 words), and 5-6 keywords for consideration. 

 

Instructions: Select the “General Paper Submissions” Track in step one of the submission process. Next, when you are asked for the Format, select “Individual paper submission.” Next, enter the paper title and abstract. Then, enter the author(s) and their email(s). You will then be shown a list of Topics (broad areas of Sociology). Please select the one topic that is the best fit for your paper. On the next screen, please enter 5 or 6 keywords that describe your paper. These keywords will help us create sessions of papers with similar themes. Click “Done” to submit. 

 

2. Author-Meets-Critics (AMC) Session Submissions (DEADLINE: October 15) 

 

Requirements: All AMC session proposals must contain the following: 

 

  1. A title for the session starting with “AMC:” and followed by the title of the book to be discussed, and then the name of the author(s); 

  2. An abstract outlining the importance/interest of the book to sociologists (max 500 words). The abstract must state the date and publisher of the book. Books must be published between Jan. 2025 and March 2027 to be eligible; 

  3. A list of 3 or 4 critics with their titles and email addresses. Critics must have agreed to participate before being listed. Panels should aim to reflect the diversity of the discipline. 

  4. Optional: ESS strongly recommends that AMC sessions have a Moderator to introduce the speakers and keep time. 

 

Instructions: Select the “Author-Meets-Critics Sessions” Track in step one of the submission process. When you are asked for the Format, again select “Author-Meets-Critics session.” When asked for “Title & Abstract,” enter a title for the session in the following format: “AMC: Book Title, by Author Name”. Enter the abstract following the guidelines above. Next, enter the book author(s) and their email(s). The next screen is for Topics, but these are not required for this Track; just click the box to continue. On the next screen, enter the name, email, and job title and affiliation for 3-4 critics, and the name and email of a Moderator if your session will have one. Click “Done” to submit. 

 

3. Fully Composed Invited Speaker Panels (DEADLINE: October 15) 

 

An invited speaker panel is intended to have panelists speaking on a given topic, typically without powerpoint. 

 

Requirements: 

 

  1. Proposed panel title; 

  2. An abstract describing the proposed panel, its significance for sociology, and/or interest for the ESS membership (max 500 words); 

  3. Panel Organizer (the Panel Organizer can also be the Moderator or one of the panelists); 

  4. A list of 3-5 panelists and their email addresses. Panelists must have agreed to participate before being listed. Panels should aim to reflect the diversity of the discipline; 

  5. A Moderator to introduce the speakers, keep time, and ask questions of the panel. 

 

Instructions: Select the “Fully Composed Invited Speaker Panels” Track in step one of the submission process. When you are asked for the Format, again select “Fully composed invited speaker panel.” It will then ask for the Title & Abstract; enter the title of the proposed panel and an abstract describing the panel. Next, it will ask for the authors, but here you should instead enter the information for the Panel Organizer. The next screen is for Topics, but these are not required for this Track; just click the box to continue. On the next screen, please enter the name and email address for each panelist in the session. If your session will have a Moderator, enter their name and email here too; otherwise, leave these items blank. Click “Done” to submit. 

 

4. Fully Composed Paper Session Submissions (DEADLINE: October 15) 

 

A Fully Composed Paper Session allows a Session Organizer to set a session theme and bring together empirical papers on that theme. 

 

Requirements:  

 

  1. Proposed session title; 

  2. An abstract describing the proposed paper session, its significance for sociology, and/or interest for the ESS membership (max 500 words); 

  3. Session Organizer (the Session Organizer can also be the Moderator, Discussant, or one of the paper authors); 

  4. A list of 3-5 papers with their titles, authors, and authors’ email addresses. Authors must have agreed to participate before being listed. Panels should aim to reflect the diversity of the discipline; 

  5. Optional: ESS strongly recommends that sessions have a Moderator to introduce the speakers and keep time. We also recommend Discussants for paper sessions with 4 or fewer papers to discuss them and raise questions for the authors. 

 

Instructions: Select the “Fully Composed Paper Sessions” Track in step one of the submission process. Next, when you are asked for the Format, again select “Fully composed paper session.” It will then ask for the Title & Abstract; enter the title of the proposed session and an abstract describing the session. Next, it will ask for the authors, but here you should instead enter the information for the Session Organizer. The next screen is for Topics, but these are not required for this Track; just click the box to continue. On the next screen, please enter the title, author(s), and author email(s) for each paper in the session. If your session will have a Moderator and/or Discussant, enter their name and emails here too; otherwise, leave these items blank. Click “Done” to submit. 

 

5. Undergraduate Poster Submissions (DEADLINE: December 15) 

 

Requirements: Undergraduate student poster submissions require a title, author(s), and brief description (max 500 words). 

 

Instructions:  Select the “Undergraduate Posters” Track in step one of the submission process. Next, when you are asked for the Format, again select “Undergraduate poster.” Next, enter a title for your poster and a brief description where it asks for an abstract. Then, enter the author(s) and their email(s). The next screen is for Topics, but these are not required for this Track; just click the box to continue. Answer the additional question about first-time attendance and click “Done” to submit. 

 

6. Mini-Conference (MC) Paper Submissions (DEADLINE: October 15) 

 

If your paper fits one of the MC themes, submit it to one of our MCs. The MCs for ESS2027 are:

  • Peopling Politics: Race, Class, and Inequality in US Politics 

  • Teaching Sociology 

  • Narratives of Labor and Technology 

  • Diasporic Womanist Sociology 

  • Military Sociology

  • Environmental Sociology: Examining Environmental Crisis across Difference 

  • Understanding Differences within Health Professions Education and Delivery 

  • Sociology of Reproduction 

  • Black Placemaking in a Divided Age: Difference, Power, and the Possibilities of Worldmaking

Requirements: Paper submissions to the MCs require a title, author(s), an abstract (max 500 words), and 5-6 keywords for consideration. Be sure to specify in the abstract how your paper connects with the MC theme. 

 

Instructions: Select the “Mini-Conference” Track in step one of the submission process. Next, under Format, select “Individual paper submission.” Next, enter the paper title and abstract. Then, enter the paper author(s) and their email(s). Under the Topics step, select the specific Mini-Conference you are submitting to. On the next screen, please enter 5 or 6 keywords that describe your paper. On the next screen, please enter 5 or 6 keywords that describe your paper, and click “Done” to submit. 

 

7. Committee on Gender Equity (CGE) Spotlight Session Paper Submissions (DEADLINE: October 15) 

 

If your paper fits the theme of Gender Equity, you can submit it for a CGE Spotlight Session. 

 

Requirements: Paper submissions for CGE Spotlight Sessions require a title, author(s), a short abstract (max 500 words), and 5-6 keywords for consideration. 

 

Instructions: Select the “Committee on Gender Equity Spotlight Session Paper Submissions” Track in step one of the submissions process. Next, under Format, select “Individual paper submission.” Then enter the paper title and abstract. Next, enter the paper author(s) and their email(s). The next screen is for Topics, but these are not required for this Track; just click the box to continue. On the next screen, please enter 5 or 6 keywords that describe your paper, and click “Done” to submit. 

 

8. Committee on the Status of Ethnicity, Race and Racism (CSERR) Spotlight Session Paper Submissions (DEADLINE: October 15) 

 

If your paper fits the theme of Ethnicity, Race, and Racism, you can submit it for a CSERR Spotlight Session. 

 

Requirements: Paper submissions for CSERR Spotlight Sessions require a title, author(s), a short abstract (max 500 words), and 5-6 keywords for consideration. 

 

Instructions: Select the “Committee on the Status of Ethnicity, Race, and Racism Spotlight Session Paper Submissions” Track in step one of the submissions process. Next, under Format, select “Individual paper submission.” Then enter the paper title and abstract. Next, enter the paper author(s) and their email(s). The next screen is for Topics, but these are not required for this Track; just click the box to continue. On the next screen, please enter 5 or 6 keywords that describe your paper, and click “Done” to submit. 

 

9. Committee on Community Colleges (CCC) Spotlight Session Paper Submissions (DEADLINE: October 15) 

 

If your paper fits the theme of issues related to Community Colleges, you can submit it for a CCC Spotlight Session. 

 

Requirements: Paper submissions for CCC Spotlight Sessions require a title, author(s), a short abstract (max 500 words), and 5-6 keywords for consideration. 

 

Instructions: Select the “Committee on Community Colleges Spotlight Session Paper Submissions” Track in step one of the submissions process. Next, under Format, select “Individual paper submission.” Then enter the paper title and abstract. Next, enter the paper author(s) and their email(s). The next screen is for Topics, but these are not required for this Track; just click the box to continue. On the next screen, please enter 5 or 6 keywords that describe your paper, and click “Done” to submit.
