Furman University Visiting Professor

The Department of Sociology at Furman University invites applications for a 1-year Visiting Instructor position beginning Fall 2019. A Ph.D. in Sociology by time of appointment is not required. Research and teaching specialization is open. We seek a candidate that can significantly contribute to Furman’s strategic vision, the Furman Advantage, and its enhanced commitment to diversity and inclusion coupled with direct engagement with community partners. Candidates should submit a CV, list of references, a cover letter and a teaching statement. The teaching statement should specifically explain the candidate’s: (a) general approach to teaching undergraduate students; (b) past teaching experience, (c) description of how your teaching, scholarship, mentoring and/or service might contribute to a liberal arts college community that includes a commitment to diversity as one of its core values; and (d) a list of mid- and upper-level courses other than the introduction to sociology that the candidate would like to teach, along with an explanation of how these courses would strengthen or supplement the department’s current offerings and curriculum. This position also provides an opportunity for teaching and pedagogical enhancement, especially for applicants who have not completed the PhD by time of appointment. This position will involve teaching a minimum of four courses, at least 2 of which will be Introduction to Sociology. The maximum enrollment for any of these courses will be 28 students. The position will be competitively compensated given the teaching responsibilities and will include health benefits. There is the opportunity to teach 5 courses for applicants with a PhD at time of appointment.

In addition to the direct teaching experience, the chosen applicant will receive observation, assessment and feedback from current faculty members. This position also will provide the opportunity to participate in pedagogy training and enhancement opportunities offered by the University. We are seeking an individual who is dedicated to excellent teaching in a liberal arts environment, welcomes opportunities to work with students as peers and partners in learning.
